CANTON'S NOTES

by Barrie Ross

The changing season has brought with it many changes to the face of life in the gay community here in Canton, and we thought the rest of the state would love to hear what's happening in our town...

Saturday, September 23, 1978 our newest night spot, Bobbie's marked the grand opening of Why Not Club.

The community turned out en masse to share the great Italian Cuisine provided by the club's

entertainment that followed. Part of that entertainment was the competition for the title of "Miss" and "Mr." Why Not Club, and after judging the talent and appearance of the many contestants that came from as far away as Cleveland and Youngswith her startlingly true rentown Miss Suzzane Strattford won the hearts of all present ditions of Barbra Streisand and was crowned "Miss Why Not."

Mr. Why Not" winner Randy Pachen thrilled the crowd with

GAY CANDIDATES

Massachusett's State Representative Elaine Noble, the country's only lesbian state legislator, was defeated in her bid for the U.S. Senate in the state's primary election. She obtained 6% of the vote, coming in last in a field of five.

Noble's main setback in the campaign was lack of funds, although she had the support of powerful state Democrats.

In the New York primary, two gay activists were defeated in attempts for nomination to the State Assembly. From the 57th Assembly District, Ginny Appuzzo came in last out of a field of four. However, despite the loss, she will be on the ballo! with the endorsement of the Liberal Party.

The candidate for the 64th Assembly District Robert Rygor was defeated by William Passanante. His opponent has sponsored gay, rights legislation for the last eight years.

House Representative Frederich Richmond won renomination in New York, despite a guilty plea to soliciting sex from two men in Washington, D.C. His margin of victory was 3500 votes against an opponent who posted "Child Molester" over Richmond's campaign signs.

Bowie's "Diamond Dogs." Canton's lesbian theatre company, "The Sunkissed Kids" provided the floor show portion of the evening's festivities and were awarded the special honor of "Best Female Performers."

We plan to see more of them during Thanskgiving weekend when they are scheduled to present their "Sunkissed Review" at the Why Not Club. Since the "Sunkissed Kids" was formed in December, 1977, they have brought us many hours of outstanding entertainment geared for the gay audience, and since their true purpose is to further the economic, intellectual, and social growth of the gay community in Stark County we support them in their fund raising efforts through theatre one hundred percent.

It was decided by our Board of directors and congregation on April 16th to license Tony lorio as our pastor under our bylaws as an independent church. Our church structure is a definite one with a board of directors, various committees, church by-laws and a church register.

Public awareness of our activities is growing as we increase our efforts to serve the community. We are starting a bar ministry and have a prison ministry underway.

According to the rites of our church, two couples were united in Holy Union this April.

Planned for the future are a monthly newsletter and meetings with groups in the Akron and Cleveland area.

With God's help we have accomplished many things and hope and pray to do much more.
